Church of the Nativity

No visit to Bethlehem would be complete without a visit to Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity. It was explained to us that the door was purposely made low to force everyone entering to bow as they entered. Another explanation offered on another visit by another guide said that the short door was designed to prevent invading armies from being able to ride into the church on horseback and pillaging the holy site. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish the legends that have grown up around these sites from history. But, as our guide said, “Whether it is this or that, it doesn’t matter. This place is holy to us.”
